ENEL is the largest electrical utility in Italy. covering about 95 % of
the electricity production by utilities and about 81 % of the total electricity
of the country.
Since the '70s. ENEL is promoting the development and application of electric vehicles in co-operation with industry. Most of activity is performed by ENEL's Study and Research Direction DSR. The main topics are research on batteries. in-field trials of vehicle fleets. setting-up and trial of recharging infrastructures. and studies of the impact of electric vehicles on the energy. environmental and urban traffic systems. Over the years. some 100 electric vehicles have been tested. and recently the development of advanced-technology vehicles has been financed. An experimental network of recharging stations has been recently set up.
